A couple of weeks ago I posted this quote by Lisa Bevere on social media:

Your kids will either inherit God’s promises or your fears.

I had lots of messages and engagement on that post so I thought I would write a blog post to encourage you and identify some of the promises from Scripture that we can pray over our children.

  1. RESCUE: Psalm  91:14-16 MSG “If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God, “I’ll get you out of any trouble. I’ll give you the best of care if you’ll only get to know and trust me. Call to me and I’ll answer, be at your side in bad times; I’ll rescue you, then throw you a party. I’ll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!”

What a beautiful, poetic description of how God loves our children! What more could we hope for than the Almighty God ready and waiting for their call? This knowledge is such a comfort and a guide for the next generation that we are raising. As a mum, I know that I cannot bear the thought of something terrible happening to one of my children and them calling to me when I cannot hear them. But God hears us every time. Are we instilling this promise over them? Are we telling them? Showing them how we have gotten to know the Father in such a way that we know that we can run to him or even just whisper to him and he will be with us, hearing us and loving us. He desperately wants us away from evil and living in sweet union with him.

  1. COURAGE: Romans 8:38 MSG Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture…None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing – nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable – absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

Honestly, I feel so relieved and at peace when I read this over my children. Nothing in this broken world – a world where we are fighting for what is right all the time – nothing here can lesson or make a mark on the love he has for our children. Nothing that they do, nothing that they think and none of the decisions they make will have any impact on his love. The only thing that matters is that they choose him. Let’s not get lazy in our dedication to imprinting his love in their hearts and to reassuring them that it doesn’t matter what happens in life – he is always there and he is always truth and love.

  1. PEACE: Isaiah 26:3 NLT You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

I pray for peace for my children. Peace in this tumultuous world. Peace in this confusing world. Sometimes it feels like peace is so far from the culture of our time. But he promises us and our children more than just peace – he promises us PERFECT peace. Doesn’t that sound so divine? We just need to keep our eyes on him and he will keep us in perfect peace. What an opportunity we have to show our kids how incredibly life-changing it is to live with God!

  1. FUTURE: Jeremiah 29:11 MSG “I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.”

Yes – our beautiful children have bright futures. They can be confident, they can dream dreams, they can be excited because the God of all creation has it planned out to fulfil their hearts desires, to show them how to soar and reach heights that they hadn’t even dreamed of. Even more than us, he wants them to have the future that they hope for. As parents, we need to remind them and show them the importance of seeking God in their decisions. Listening to him. Praying in boldness. Waiting confidently for him. We can show them how he has answered our prayers and how with him, our lives are better than anything we could imagine for ourselves.

I hope this has been encouraging for you! We can pray these verses over our children. Of course there are many many more promises in the Word of God that we can apply to our children and pray over them.
