John 16:33 MSG
Jesus answered them, “…I’m not abandoned. The Father is with me. I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.”
It can be easy to get caught up in the fact that there is really bad stuff happening in the world – both globally and in our own personal lives.
Jesus forewarned of the response to abandon faith when life is hard. He says to his disciples in John that he has given them the key to deep peace in spite of the godless world they live in. He assures them that they will face difficulties but to remember and take comfort in the fact that he has overcome the world.
What we can also see from this passage is God’s heart to prepare us. Jesus prepared his disciples as much as possible. He prepared them so that they would remember to hold on to their faith when all seemed lost. He prepared them so they would keep faith until they saw him again.
This notion of God preparing us is also present in Deuteronomy 31:8 and Psalm 139:5-15.
God is more than the circumstances in this world. He is more than our ‘now’. His is the bigger picture. The presence of the Father in your heart will keep you in His deep peace until you eventually get to his Holy place in Heaven.
Prayer and Reflection
Take a moment to thank God that He makes His deep peace available to you each day.
Now, identify an area or worry in your life that is lacking His deep peace. Give it over to Him. Invite Him into your heart and into that situation.
Finally, be still before Him and listen for what He is saying to you.
